Natural Algae EyePads by artefactum are based on Laminaria algae that grow under exceptional natural conditions. Their origin lies in one of the most productive and at the same time most pristine marine regions on earth: the Benguela ecosystem off the coast of Namibia and selected coastal regions of Ireland.

A unique ecosystem as the foundation

The west African coast of Namibia is shaped by the Benguela Current, one of the oldest, strongest and most nutrient-rich ocean current systems in the world. In combination with constant south to south-easterly winds, it creates one of the most intensive upwelling regions worldwide. Cold, nutrient-rich deep water is transported from depths of several hundred meters to the surface.

This deep water is exceptionally rich in mineralized nutrients derived from natural decomposition processes of organic material. In combination with sunlight, it forms the basis of an extremely productive marine food chain. At the same time, the isolated location, hyper-arid coastal conditions and very low industrial impact mean that the water of the Benguela system is among the purest seawater in the world.

Laminaria algae as a natural active matrix

Under these conditions, Laminaria algae develop a particularly high biological value. They act as natural reservoirs for moisturizing, protective and skin-caring substances that they absorb from nutrient-rich seawater during growth.

artefactum uses these properties in a targeted way and processes the algae in a proprietary, gentle process. The algae are highly dried, stabilizing and preserving their structure without losing their natural functionality. In this state, the EyePads are fully biodegradable and have a long shelf life.

Activation and active ingredient release

The Natural Algae EyePads are reactivated only when the appropriate liquid is added. At that moment, they absorb water, become flexible and begin to release their natural components in a controlled way. The algae act not only as a carrier material, but as an active matrix that stores moisture and releases it gradually to the skin.
